Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.

—William James

For quite some now you’ve been working on your research project in relative isolation. Interactions with the wider academic community have been limited to reading articles in scientific journals, and perhaps hearing some anecdotes about other groups from your supervisor or more senior PhD students. Now you’re going to meet some of these big-name scientists at your first international conference. No doubt your excitement about the trip is mixed with a bit of apprehension, as presenting your own results was a requirement of attending the conference. So, you’re not just going to listen to the big-name scientists, you’ll also be sharing your own work with them. Moreover, just organising the details of the trip is turning out to be more of a hassle than you expected. This chapter aims to help you sort out all the things you need to make your first international conference a pleasure, rather than a pain, so that your experience of the conference is what it should be: one of the perks of working in academia.
